The Earth's Forests
Forests cover just over 9 percent of the earth’s surface. They are one of the most significant drivers of, and contributors to, the overall health of the earth’s biosphere. The organization Conservation International estimates that every year the earth loses about 32 million acres of tropical forests, an area about the size of New England. The burning and slashing of the earth’s forests is estimated to contribute approximately 20 percent of the world’s greenhouse gasses, significantly adding to the problems of climate change and global warming.
